The Castle of Callenberg is situated on a mountain
top amid the Callenberg Forest which has extensive
walking routes passing through it.
The three-winged castle building is, as a whole, a
significant example of Neogothic architecture in
Bavaria.
Between 1831 and 1856/57 the Dukes Ernst I. and
Ernst II. of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha carried out
radical rebuilding of this defence fortress which
reaches back into the 12th century. The architect
laying the plans for rebuilding of the lower
castle was Georg Konrad Rothbart.
